ABSTRACT

Environmental education (EE) in early childhood education (ECE) is crucial for shaping a generation that values and actively engages in environmental conservation. This systematic literature review explores the benefits and challenges of integrating EE into ECE. Utilising a systematic literature review and thematic analysis, this review synthesises insights from peer-reviewed studies published in English and Indonesian academic journals between 2013 and 2023. The findings reveal significant benefits, including the development of environmental responsibility, enhanced cognitive skills, and improved emotional well-being. Additionally, this study highlights the contribution of EE to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), which can provide long-term positive impacts. However, challenges such as limited resources, inadequate teacher training, and curriculum constraints are also identified. This review emphasises the need for comprehensive strategies to effectively integrate EE into ECE, as well as policy recommendations to support better implementation, to foster sustainable practices from an early age.
