ABSTRACT

The usage of the Reinforced Soil (RS) Walls technology with vertical faced segmental concrete panels as facia element and polymeric strips ParaWeb as soil reinforcement for complex structures like true abutments, partial height RS walls, trapezoidal walls, back-to-back walls, tiered (super imposed) RS walls, shored mechanically stabilized earth walls etc., needs more due diligence while designing and construction. When the height of RS wall is more than 15m, consideration should be given to superimposed (tiered) RS walls with an intermediate berm from a constructability point of view. Reconfiguring a tall wall into tiered walls with smaller heights permits a fresh start with a new leveling pad which reduces vertical stress on the segmental concrete panels and permits better control of vertical alignment of the wall face. The current case study represents the design methodology adopted for two-tiered reinforced soil (RS) walls in an expressway.
