ABSTRACT

Current study investigates dynamic behavior of tropical peat extracted from Silchar, Assam (NE India), characterized by high organic content (75–90%), exceeding values. Dynamic properties such as shear wave velocity (Vs ), Young’s modulus (E), shear modulus (G), and damping ratio (ξ) were evaluated through in-situ MASW and laboratory tests including resonant column (RC) and cyclic triaxial (cyTX) in a wide variety of strain range (low to high). Study also examined ground response analysis (GRA) incorporating site specific parameters derived from insitu and laboratory analysis. In addition a case study of the earthen embankment constructed on peat at the target study region was also evaluated by undergoing numerical analysis which showcased very low factor of safety value of 0.30. Thus, present study tends to evaluate vulnerability of structures constructed on peat subjected to seismic loading.
