ABSTRACT

The Kakatiya kings during their ruling period, have constructed magnificent temples in a unique style recognized popularly as the Kakatiya architecture. The thousand pillar temple located at Hanumakonda in Telangana state is one of the most celebrated temples built by the Kakatiya kings during 1162-63 CE. The Kalyana Mandapa is an associated monumental structure of this Thousand pillar temple complex. This monument suffered severe distress due to differential settlements and it was decided for its reconstruction by the Archaeological Survey of India. The geotechnical investigations and technical recommendations for the foundation bed improvement was entrusted to the Geotechnical Engineering Division of National Institute of Technology - Warangal. The present paper elaborates the findings from foundation bed used for this 900-year-old structure, the reasons for the damage along with the details of ground improvement techniques used to restore this master piece of monument retaining its originality in its Indian Heritage.
