ABSTRACT

A one-year site trial with J Resources, a gold mining company, assessed the performance of high abrasion resistant polymer coated double twisted (DT) hexagonal mesh netting for surficial erosion control, promoting vegetation growth and slope stabilization. The terrain features acidic soil with a NAG pH range of 2.35 to 5.11. While initial grass growth was observed, vegetation struggled to establish, leading to project discontinuation. After one year of exposure to harsh conditions, the DT netting was retrieved and showed neither significant degradation of the high abrasion resistant polymer coating integrity, nor losses in the DT mesh mechanical properties, demonstrating exceptional resistance to acidic environments. This trial underscores the importance of using durable and corrosion-resistant materials for long-term slope stability. The continued integrity of the mesh highlights its potential for broader applications in similar environments. Such reliable technical solutions are crucial for maintaining slope integrity and minimizing disruptions to mining activities.
