ABSTRACT

In the infrastructure projects, right of way constraints have to be rigorously followed for the analysis and design of foundations. For a project near the sea, with strata as lateritic soil, initially pile foundation was proposed. The alignment chosen was much above the highest high tide level. During the investigation it was observed that the strata was reasonably firm and was in a position to propose another foundation system. Other issue faced was environment aspect related to disposal of bentonite slurry. Plate load tests were conducted to check alternate foundation system. Back analysis was carried out to get shear parameters. Based on the analysis it was possible to change deep foundation to shallow foundation. This paper presents a case study for bridge structure and covers the detailed analysis carried out for proposing the shallow foundation based on the plate load test values arrived and its implementation at the site.
