ABSTRACT

Our forefathers have exhausted the sound strata and left us with construction on treacherous soils. Today we are left with constructing structures on the soils with penetration values between 0 and 04. This paper cover0s1 the case study of constructing a commercial building on such soils. A detailed study was carried out on borehole data made available from the site. Based on the rigorous analysis, several foundations were shortlisted and a decision was taken to adopt geo-cells as an alternative for ground improvement. For this project, a detailed finite element analysis was carried out, and based on the findings, a detailed design and method statement was prepared for construction. On the lines with the method statement, the construction was carried out. Plate load tests were performed to observe the improvements. This paper presents the detailed analysis, design and subsequent field observations pre and post construction of the project.
