ABSTRACT
Due to the paucity of land in congested megalopolises, one is forced to go underground for disposing of the municipal sewer waste. At a location, we came across the condition for constructing micro tunnels through soft, saturated clays. While carrying out analysis, it was observed that there was lateral displacement of the soft saturated clay in both vertical and horizontal directions. As an alternative, it was suggested to carry out lime stabilization by injecting lime in a well-calculated grid manner. The magnitude of ground improvement was evaluated based on the vane shear strength of the soft saturated clay pre and post improvement (after 28 days of curing). This paper covers the FEM analysis to determine the required strength, mix design for the lime stabilization to achieve desired strength for carrying out the stabilization and finally evaluate the improvement of the vane shear strength and re-confirmed the same using FEM.
