ABSTRACT
Background: the incidence of oral cancer is arising around the world. Therefore, researchers are interested in Syzygium aromaticum and Clinacanthus nutans due its anticancer properties. Objectives: to evaluate the cytotoxic potential of ethanol extract from the leaves of S. aromaticum, C. nutans, and a combination of both leaves. Method: the HSC-3 cell line was treated with ethanol extract of S. aromaticum, C. nutans and a combination both leaves at 10 µg/mL, 25 µg/mL and 50 µg/mL for 24 hours using MTT method. Result: The ethanol extract of s. aromaticum leaves at concentration of 50 µg/mL is the most effective in killing HSC-3 cell line among all concentrations. The results showed that all groups have not statistical differences to positive control. Conclusion: The extracts of S. aromaticum leaves, C. nutans leaves, and a combination of both have cytotoxicity effect on HSC-3 cell line.
