ABSTRACT

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of thread-type and holder-type dental floss in improving proximal oral hygiene. Methods: Fifty dental students were divided into two groups: Group 1 used thread floss, and Group 2 used holder floss. The Interdental Hygiene (HYG) index was used to assess plaque-free interdental surfaces before and after flossing. Results: Both groups showed significant improvement in HYG scores after flossing (p = 0.00), with a 24,1% increase in the thread floss group and 21.4% in the holder floss group. However, the difference between the two groups was not statistically significant (p = 0.464). Conclusions: The findings indicate that dental flossing effectively enhances proximal hygiene, with thread floss performing slightly better than holder floss.
