ABSTRACT
Objectives: This study aims to characterize the combination of apatite and chitosan cement from Black Soldier Fly as a potential bone substitute. The main focus is to evaluate the effect of the addition of BSF chitosan on the setting time. Method: The experimental method involved the preparation of three formulations: control (100% apatite cement), 95% apatite cement + 5% BSF chitosan, and 90% apatite cement + 10% BSF chitosan. Setting time is measured using the vicat method. Results: The formulation with 10% chitosan BSF and L/P ratio of 0.32 shows an optimal combination with an initial setting time of 22.1 ± 0.9. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the potential of a combination of apatite cement and BSF chitosan as a promising bone substitute. There is a distinct difference in setting time between apatite cement without the addition of chitosan powder and apatite cement with the addition of chitosan.
