ABSTRACT

Hypertension is a growing global health concern, with uncontrolled hypertension increasing the risk of chronic diseases. This study investigated the prevalence and risk factors of uncontrolled hypertension among adults in East Kalimantan using 2018 Indonesia Basic Health Research data. The study involved 761 adults diagnosed with hypertension, and data were analysed using the Chi-Square test. Results showed that 84.1% of participants had uncontrolled hypertension. Age (OR 2.56, 95% CI 1.63–4.00, p < 0.001) and waist circumference (OR 1.62, 95% CI 1.08–2.43, p = 0.026) were significantly associated with an increased risk of uncontrolled hypertension. However, other factors such as gender, education level, occupation, residence, and body mass index showed no significant association with uncontrolled hypertension risk. These findings emphasise the need for routine blood pressure monitoring and waist circumference checks among adults. Incorporating hypertension management into age-specific routine healthcare services in East Kalimantan is essential for effectively preventing and controlling this condition.
