ABSTRACT

Studying the hyperbolic paraboloid umbrellas that form the Queensgate Market in Huddersfield, this paper reimagines their concrete construction in reinforced stone blockwork. Summarising the author’s Masters Dissertation, this paper first explores how hyperbolic paraboloid umbrellas work. It then examines the potential of these structures in stone and how much steel or carbon fibre reinforcement they would require. This is researched through computational analysis, hand calculations, physical modelling and load-testing.
