ABSTRACT

This research studies the integration of architectural elements of cultural significance and structural design to correspond to the context and climate in two of UAE’s recently built architectural projects, specifically The House of Wisdom and the Shindagha Welcome Pavilion. These projects tackle climate challenges and emphasize regional identity by combining technology, cultural significance, and thoughtful design strategies. The House of Wisdom reimagines passive cooling strategies with a modern interpretation, reincorporating a 15-meter-wide overhang and perforated screens for sunlight control. Meanwhile, the Shindagha Welcome Pavilion, designed by X Architects, blends natural and manufactured materials. Their building envelopes reflect regional identity while addressing the challenges of designing for arid regions in a post-carbon future.
