ABSTRACT
This paper develops an anatomy of design principles as mediators from theory to practice, to guide the design for lasting architectures of low embodied energy in their use-stage. The paper uses a review of three precedent studies on building change with different approaches to formulating design advice, and uses participatory action research to preliminarily test emergent design principles with key stakeholders as well as in design processes with architecture students. With the aim of delivering value in practice, the paper proposes a framework to tie empirically grounded spatial propositions to quantifiable outcomes by combining positivist and interpretive research approaches. Conclusively, the paper outlines a methodology to sequence design principles for their application and further testing in design processes of architectural practice.
