ABSTRACT
Frugal innovation is relevant in contexts where resource scarcity necessitates creative problem-solving. By leveraging limited resources, optimising manufacturing processes, and focusing on critical functionalities, frugal innovation emphasises simple, affordable, and environmentally sustainable solutions to address the unmet needs of underserved populations. Therefore, existing solutions are reimagined or newly developed for socio-economic reasons. However, multicultural and socio-economic factors that influence the scalability of frugal interventions in contexts such as sub-Saharan Africa in the Fourth Industrial Revolution remain underexplored. This study investigates the multicultural and socio-economic factors that influence the scalability of frugal innovations in Global South contexts within the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. This research seeks to identify the key determinants that impact the scalability of frugal interventions in resource-constrained contexts in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. A conceptual review was adopted to consolidate the understanding of scaling low-cost solutions within resource-constrained contexts by analysing the frugal principles, design techniques, and case studies of successful instances. This chapter serves as a valuable resource for policymakers, innovators, and user experience (UX) designers, providing a reference for scaling up contextually relevant interventions.
