ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to identify the information needs of a target group within a resource-constrained environment, guiding the co-design of an appropriate digital health intervention. Without contextual understanding, frugality cannot be deemed a crucial aspect of intervention design. The following research question structures the chapter: How can the information flows and stakeholder roles be determined for context-sensitive digital frugal innovation interventions based on the information needs of expectant mothers in resource-restricted contexts? Emphasising the understanding phase of the design process provides a strong foundation for co-designing an intervention that contributes to systematic design and is framed as a societally relevant problem. This translates to co-designing digital interventions, considering issues at stake, to reach a transformed and improved situation for the target group through iterative low-fidelity prototyping. The proposed method is demonstrated with a pilot study to ensure that rich data is obtained following a frugal innovation approach for low-cost healthcare interventions.
