ABSTRACT
This research conducts a bibliometric analysis of dark tourism between 1993 and 2021. This paper examined 397 documents published in different sources between 1993 to 2021. The investigation employed the Bibliometric R package (R studio) and the database Scopus to find well-known publications, writers, nations, papers, and topics related to the theme. The results indicated an upsurge in citations and publications in dark tourism, with a yearly growth rate of 15.78%. Of the 164 journals, the Journal of Heritage Tourism, published by Taylor & Francis, is recognized as the leading publication in its field, featuring 27 published articles. J. J. Lennon emerged as the most prolific contributor. The most-cited author is A. V. Seaton, and the authors’ h-index reveals that R. K. Isaac, J. S. Podoshen, A. V. Seaton, and J. Zhang are the most impactful authors.
Regarding total publications, Glasgow Caledonian University was the most productive university, and the UK has the most citations. The NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences dominates in terms of collaborations, and the USA is the primary collaborator with other countries. The keyword “dark tourism” is the most frequently used.
