ABSTRACT

Although mental health problems are rather common among Indian inmates, the nation's prison system has given this urgent issue little thought. Lack of comprehensive mental health services in Indian jails has resulted in higher degrees of violence and unsatisfactory results for people behind bars. The need for mental health treatment in declining violence and educating results for Indian convicts is dealt with in this paper. This study examines the present level of mental health services in Indian prisons and explores the frequency of mental health illnesses among prisoners. It also addresses the need for legislative reforms and proper resource allocation as well as the possible advantages of offering jailed people thorough mental health treatment programs. Acknowledging the need for mental health treatment in the correctional system enables India to build a road for more successful reintegration of prisoners into society and more efficient rehabilitation.
