ABSTRACT

Lugubrious and absolution are two different things. Lugubrious is the feeling of sadness that one feel inside and absolution is the releasing of all those suppressing feelings and the attainment of peace. Inner turmoil does not erupt out of nowhere. It erupts due to emotional manipulation, conflicting thoughts, intuition, unexpected outcomes. Since the beginning of the novel, Nanda Kaul, the protagonist of the text has been struggling hard with her own emotions. She has apparently a very happy time all the way, but she has something under the sheen that fuels her desire to escape from the materialistic world into the world of natural beauty. Her upbringing is princely joyous and full of comforts; superb married life yet she pins for freedom. This paper deals with the circumstances that leads to her inner turmoil which results in her self – isolation. The text ends with Nanda's great grand - daughter, Raka informing Nanda that she sets the forest on fire, which is actually not, as it symbolizes the outbreak of Nanda's emotional outbreak at the death of Ila Das which abrupt her inner turmoil that has been long suppressed in her life. In this way, the paper highlights the inner turmoil with linkage to lugubrious and absolution.
