ABSTRACT

Hatha Yoga is widely practiced today and has gained global recognition, particularly through events like World Yoga Day. This research focuses on Hatha Yoga within the Indian knowledge system, especially as outlined by the Nath Yogis. In Nath traditions, Lord Shiva is revered as the original Nath, and Guru Gorakshanath is credited with reorganizing and revitalizing Hatha Yoga during the medieval period. The term “Nath” means one who has mastered oneself, signifying control over inner instincts and desires. Hatha Yoga represents the union of Chitta Shakti (mental energy) and Prana Shakti (vital energy). The influence of Tantra is evident in Hatha Yoga texts, with Hathapradipika being the most significant. Many of the practices performed globally during World Yoga Day originate from these texts. As 192 countries celebrated the 10th World Yoga Day on June 21, 2024, it highlights the profound contribution of Nath Yoga Sadhana to holistic human well-being worldwide.
