ABSTRACT
This paper introduces a parenting style assessment tool designed precisely for elementary school students in the Indian context. Grounded in Baumrind's (1971) well-known classification of parenting styles “authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and uninvolved” the tool also draws on the two key dimensions of parenting: responsiveness and control, as described by “Maccoby and Martin” (1983). What makes this tool unique is its focus on the real-life experiences of children and families in Haryana, with items developed to reflect the cultural, educational, and social environment of today's Indian family. The structure of the tool is based on control and response. The tool tested for its reliability and validity, proving it a useful resource for educators, parents, counsellors and researchers who want to better understand the influence of parenting on young children's development.
