ABSTRACT

First-generation biofuels made from biomass have attracted a lot of interest as a potential means of reducing the negative environmental effects of fossil fuels and promoting renewable energy sources. The potential, difficulties and available biomass feedstocks for the development of first-generation biofuels are examined in the present article. It covers the benefits and drawbacks of using biomass as a feedstock and emphasises the logistical, financial and environmental difficulties involved in its production. The chapter also provides an overview of various biomass feedstocks, such as crops, residues and special energy crops, which are used in the production of biofuels. Furthermore, the chapter also attempts to provide a thorough understanding of the opportunities and restrictions in using biomass for the manufacture of first-generation biofuels by looking at these factors.
