ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the application of interaction design methods for enabling empathetic interactions between artificial intelligence (AI) and humans in the metaverse. First, we provide an overview of the concepts of human-machine society and human-machine collaboration, emphasizing the importance of incorporating emotional mechanisms to enhance collaboration efficiency and improve the interactive experience in human-machine collaboration. The chapter then introduces the concept of the metaverse and the role of AI within it, with a focus on analyzing the application of three-dimensional design tools in virtual spaces. Subsequently, the chapter delves into the concept of empathy, its psychological foundations, and its manifestation in product design. In the realm of artificial empathy, it introduces affective computing and artificial empathy computing in computer science, and presents a case study on AI empathy in the metaverse. Finally, the chapter highlights the need to consider ethical and cultural responsibilities when designing AI with empathetic capabilities and summarizes the optimistic and pessimistic attitudes toward AI technology. Overall, this chapter provides a theoretical foundation and practical exploration for empathetic interaction design of AI and its application in the metaverse.
