ABSTRACT

This chapter delves into the nuances of the third-wave HCI research in relation to social interactions and human behaviors within online communities formed on social media and immersive media. It particularly examines the grand challenges of engaging with and managing digital content, such as those inherent in short videos on TikTok and livestreaming on Twitch, the threat of negative online content, and the complexities of content moderation and curation in online spaces. By highlighting the transformative influence of generative AI algorithms on user-generated content, the chapter further critically discusses the socio-technical implications of these phenomena. This chapter attempts to guide HCI researchers and practitioners through the uncharted terrains of social HCI.
