ABSTRACT

This article analyses the United States of America (US) foreign policy towards the democratisation process, and the FSA (Free Syirian Army) and SNC (Syirian National Council) effort to topple the Bashar al-Assad dictatorship regime that has ruled for 16 years in Syria. The paradox is that during the conflict between the opposition and Assad’s regime that has been supported by the military power of Russia, US support of democracy in the world does not give an explicit reaction against the actions of the Syrian regime. A using qualitative approach is used and the theoretical framework of rational choice, rational actor models and national interest. This study finds that under Barack Obama’s presidency in the fight for democracy in Syria, US foreign policy is likely to turn from being political maximalist to political minimalist. The study, suggests how this political paradigm shift happens because Syria does not have a strategic significance for US national security interests in the Middle East.
