ABSTRACT

Anger is a variable that connects aggressiveness and violent behaviour. A lot of adolescents cannot manage their anger, and it can cause them to have to deal with lawsuits and also suffer from other negative consequences. The aim of this study was to measure the impact of self-esteem and anger coping strategies on the level of anger. This study also examined the comparison between adolescents who are in prison and those who are not. The subjects of this study were 178 adolescents, 68 outside prison and 110 inside prison. The instruments used were the anger questionnaire developed by Rosellini and Worden (1997), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (1965) questionnaire, and the Behavioral Anger Response Questionnaire (Linden, 2007). The results show there is a significant relationship between self-esteem and anger coping strategies with anger level. This study found no difference in self-esteem and anger coping strategies between the two groups, and both groups have relatively high self-esteem. Two anger coping strategies significantly related with anger level are direct anger and rumination.
