ABSTRACT
The story of the relationship between charcoal and agriculture in Japan is long and complex. There are a number of connections between the history of charcoal production, natural resource management, and agriculture that span centuries. Awareness of this history is prerequisite to understanding how charcoal has reemerged, in the form of biochar, as a tool for rural sustainable development and carbon sequestration in Japan.
