ABSTRACT

Some active dune fields in the southwestern United States include the Algodones Dune Field in southeastern California; the White Sands National Monument, New Mexico; and the Kelso Dunes in the Mojave National Preserve of eastern California. Many typical eastern landscaping plants require arid soils with pH less than those commonly found in desert soils. Successful establishment and growth of these plants in desert soils typically require adjustment of the pH. Many desert soils have an A/C profile or an A/B/C with the B-horizon weakly developed because of little movement of materials such as clays in the soil profile. More characteristic of the desert soils however is the accumulation of carbonates in the soil profile. The soil surveys contain a great deal of the useful soils information including the location maps of different soil types, soil classifications, and interpretation for different uses.
