ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a signal processing techniques for damage detection in the context of structural health monitoring (SHM) with applications to civil infrastructure systems (CIS). At this point, SHM offers a very promising tool for tracking and evaluating the condition and performance of different structures and systems by means of sensing and analysis of objective measurement data. SHM is the research area focusing on condition assessment of different types of structures including aerospace, mechanical, and civil structures. The starting point of an SHM system may be considered as the sensing and data acquisition step. The properties of the data acquisition system and the sensor network are usually application specific. Frequency domain methods transform the time histories to frequency domain and extract the modal parameters in the frequency domain. These methodologies use the frequency response functions to compute the modal parameters.
