ABSTRACT
This chapter summarizes and introduces the investigation and application of HA composite coatings, including biomacromolecules and inorganic components, on Ti alloy. In recent years, numerous investigations have been carried out to fabricate HA coating or HA composite coating using a plasma spraying technique. During the formation of HA composite coating, addition of carbon nanotubes aids the nucleation sites in the crystallization of HA, preserving its inherent crystal structure. At present, the main methods of preparation of HA/collagen composite coating on metal substrate includes biomimetic coating procedures, the electrochemical co-deposition method, and electrospray deposition process. Rohanizadeh et al. used dip/spin coating method to obtain an oxidized Ti alloy surface, which was further immersed in a supersaturated calcium phosphate solution to allow apatite deposition. With the continuous release of this bioactive drug, the osseointegration was better in the Ti alloy modified by bone morphogenetic protein-2 loaded HA/gelatin composite coatings than in the alloy modified by HA coatings.
