ABSTRACT
Renewable energy is a basic ingredient for overall sustainable development. Renewable fuel sources have the potential to provide energy supplies for an indefinite period of time. First generation biofuels have good fuel properties and their production processes are commercially well developed and successfully implemented in automotive vehicles in many countries. Second generation biofuels are made from nonedible and lignocellulosic materials. Ethanol is a high octane fuel. It can be blended with gasoline to improve the octane number and also improve the fuel properties of gasoline. Gasification is the process of converting biomass into a gaseous fuel by means of partial oxidation at high temperature. Entrained flow is the most aggressive form of gasification, with pulverized coal and oxidized gas flowing cocurrently. Dimethyl ether is a diesel engine fuel with a high cetane number and has an interesting emission potential.
