ABSTRACT
Natural gas (NG) is a naturally occurring form of fossil energy and therefore nonrenewable. Natural gas occurs as gas under pressure in rocks beneath the earth’s surface or often in solution with crude oil as a volatile fraction of petroleum. It can be used in combined cycle power plants, as the efficiency is much greater than conventional steam cycle plants. Natural gas is high-octane fuel, which is more suitable for spark ignition engines or specially designed gas engines with higher compression ratios. Natural gas has a very high-autoignition temperature than that of gasoline/ diesel. It provides mass heating values around 10% higher than conventional fuels. But lower-calorific values as compared to liquid fuel on a volume basis. Natural gas is used in automobiles; hence it is necessary to store the NG in compact form in order to reduce the weight of the vehicle.
