ABSTRACT
Academic freedom is under siege everywhere in the world. 1 But do different cultures share the concept of academic freedom? Is it a universal value? Does the Chinese society, which is largely authoritarian and dictatorial both historically and in contemporary times, appreciate it as other democratic societies do?
