Academic freedom is under attack worldwide—from Turkey to Afghanistan, from Russia to Kenya. 1 According to the most recent Academic Freedom Index (AFI), academic freedom is in retreat for over 50 percent of the world’s population and is stagnating in 152 out of 179 countries, often at far too low a level. 2
