ABSTRACT
This essay tells the story of directing the first production of Suzan-Lori Parks’s The Death of the Last Black Man in the Whole Entire World. I will describe how I came to work on the project as well discuss the play’s characters and figures. The essay shares the thinking process to key decisions that Parks and I made and, in addition, offers some historical contextualization of the 1990 BACA Downtown production.
