ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I shall begin with a brief summary of the historical-political context for second language learning in Spain. In Spain, we use the CLIL rubric for Modern Languages Across the Curriculum. I shall consider the first experiences of CLIL. Next, I shall discuss the impact of CLIL on foreign language education in Spain and look at the results of CLIL programmes. After that, I offer an example of a particular CLIL programme as a Spanish case study involving mixed-ability secondary school pupils in mainstream education. Finally, some thoughts for future directions are included.
