ABSTRACT
Introduction The US combines enormous power with limited ability to influence the preferences of African leaders. As the sole remaining superpower, it has vast military strength and logistical capacity to project its power throughout the globe. At the same time, its influence is limited by the relative autonomy of the African state and the narrow nature of US strategic and economic interests. The consequence is a low-profile approach to African issues with a short-term escalation in concern at such times as leaders or the public display unease over particular issues.
