ABSTRACT
This paper investigates various facts, all of which are related to Logical Form (LF) extraction of naze “why” in Japanese. The wh-phrase naze has been assumed to be a typical adjunct wh-element in Japanese, i.e., the counterpart of English why, and consequently, its behaviour with respect to the Empty Category Principle (ECP) has been examined in the literature (cf. in particular, Lasnik and Saito 1984).
