      ABSTRACT

The Hippocratic physician relied on simple pragmatic observations (homogeneous in character) supplemented by complex theoretical suppositions (heterogeneous in implication) to distinguish diseases. In this chapter, different views of disease causation are discussed, with particular reference to observation and theory relating to bodily fluids or ‘humours’. It is noted that the considerable divergences in disease classification are allied with much fluidity in disease nomenclature.
