ABSTRACT

These opening quotes by Marx, when linked together, help elucidate the complex and interrelated driving forces that mediate global economic, political, cultural and environmental relations. From the onset, we award full recognition to Marx’s suggestion that there can be no human history without the environment, since human history has been made possible only through the metabolization of the environment via human labor power. This notion encapsulates what follows and helps us recognize the fundamental material relations between global societal processes and the environment at a multitude of spatial scales.
