ABSTRACT
During the boom years of post-war economic growth in northwest Europe the countries of the Mediterranean shores played a vital role in the supply of labour to their northern neighbours. Although there were regional variations within individual southern European countries in terms of contributions to emigration flows (King 1976), nevertheless in each country as a whole net migration flows showed population loss for long periods throughout the 1950s and 1960s, and even into the early 1970s.
