ABSTRACT

Europe has been a pioneer of the great demographic changes that have taken place in the world over the past two centuries. Rapid population growth characterized the continent during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries while today the European population finds itself in a period of very low or zero growth which some see as the last stage of the demographic transition, and others as the beginning of a new process of demographic change whose consequences are difficult to predict.
