ABSTRACT
The purpose of this chapter is to deepen understanding of the challenges of development economics and to identify new research priorities. To my mind, the most important and challenging task at present is to understand why African economies are performing so poorly. This chapter discusses what we know so far, and in what direction I think we should proceed.
