ABSTRACT

Experimental innovation is an emerging framework that promotes the expansion of internal experimentations across all organisational levels and units. The current innovation literature does not offer a clear understanding of how experimental innovation can be structured and captured, nor does it provide empirical evidence of its overall impact on the organisation's bottom line. Nonetheless, the concept of experimental innovation has attracted many organisations, including museums and cultural heritage institutions. This chapter investigates experimental innovation in museums, addressing key questions, such as how can museums encourage experimentation? What resources are needed? What is the relationship between experimentation and innovation? How can the experimentation process be managed in the museum context? Through conceptual frameworks and practical examples from the museum field in Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom, this chapter examines various experimental innovation models that encourage creativity among museum staff and advance the museum's mission as a viable and relevant cultural organisation in society.
