ABSTRACT

This chapter, based on 40 years working internationally and in interdisciplinary contexts, traces my experience of masculinities with my colleagues, most of whom were men. I begin with my earliest impressions, and then examine three research contexts in detail: an agricultural research team (in Hawaii and Sumatra); a conservation project in West Kalimantan; and a global international forestry research institution based on Java. I again use the harp analogy, though it differs here from the other contexts, as I focus primarily on the work context, only addressing the domestic in passing.
