ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the practical implementation of Indigenous Data Sovereignty at the tribal and local level, by reflecting on efforts to grow Pueblo data sovereignty among the Pueblo Nations located in the southwestern United States. As Pueblo social justice practitioner-scholars, we propose that understanding localized histories, ways of engaging, what sovereignty means to individual Indigenous nations and what traditional protocols for governing information already exist is a prerequisite for data governance mechanisms that align with local values and practices. We discuss Pueblo data sovereignty protocol recommendations that emerged in 2018 at the Pueblo Convocation on Education that also have salience for other Indigenous Peoples.
