ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the intellectual activities undertaken by Joan Estelrich (Felanitx, 1896—Paris, 1958), homme de lettres and cultural agent closely linked to nationalist and conservative politician Francesc Cambó, with particular attention to his collaboration with the PEN Club and his contribution to international intellectual cooperation. Drawing on the documents from the Fons Joan Estelrich held at the Biblioteca de Catalunya (Barcelona), the chapter reviews Estelrich’s work in the effort for European cultural cooperation during the early twenties up to the mid-thirties, from his role within the campaign of Expansió Catalana to his involvement in the organization of the Catalan section of the PEN. Documental evidence related to the PEN internal statutes drafted by Estelrich before 1935, as well as the activities run on the occasion of the 13th International Congress of PEN Clubs held in Barcelona (May 1935), is included in the appendices.
