ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how Indigenous women are (re)writing their understanding of Native history, American pop culture, and contemporary Native and Indigenous issues within traditional art practices, specifically focusing on beadwork. Though traditional art practices are employed, innovation and creativity are key in (re)writing and, I argue, (re)beading pop culture and Native issues through traditional artistic expression and practices, which is an act of resiliency. Indigenous women are utilizing beads, a Euro-American technology, to push the boundaries of Western art and pop culture. Our women and the art they create are actively continuing artistic traditions while opening up creative possibilities and showing our communities that an Indigenous future is plausible.
