ABSTRACT

This chapter draws upon Afro-diasporic and Indigenous sabidurías in Netflix’s Siempre Bruja (2019) to highlight how spiritual practitioners, like the fictional character Carmen Eguiluz, are at the forefront of constructing futurities. Sabidurías contribute to alternative and coexisting futurities by recovering non-colonial frameworks that challenge historical narratives. Furthermore, Indigenous and Afro-diasporic women have used magic (a variety of pre-Columbian cultural and religious practices), a tool of sabiduría to transform reality and intentions for the future. While contemporary scholarship in speculative fiction focuses on European ideologies aligned with science and technology, sabidurías possess supernatural metaphysical technologies that connect magic, spirituality, and power.
